Jim Taylor was one of the greatest fullbacks of all time playing for Lombardi's Green Bay Packers. A tough and brutal runner and the driving force for the Packer offense. It was past time a book should come out about or by him. However we get very little of Jim Taylor the man. What he thinks, what he feels. His youth is reduced to a handfull of pages wherein he makes his first and only reference to the "fire within". However we get no further explanation as to the source of this fire except that he grew up poor and his mother was the sole provider for the home. There are many poor children across America. Not that many of them become Hall of Fame Football players. The review of the Lombardi years brings little new information or detail on the role Taylor played. Most of it is a rehash of numerous other accounts. We do get a sense of pride in his work for the Saints after his retirement and his charity work that continues up until this day. Even the bloodclot in his brain that resulted in temporary paralysis gets little in depth attention. Its odd. I would like to see a thorough biography written about this man that explores what it takes to have his guts and endurance. Because they don't make em like him anymore. This book brought back memories. I enjoyed learning about Taylor's early life and his post-football career. Unfortunately, most of the stuff on his Green Bay Packer years are borrowed from other sources that I had already read. If you haven't read about the Glory Years of the Green Bay Packers, this would be a great book to start with. If you are pretty well versed in the 1960s Packers, you will be slightly disappointed.
