It has been my good fortune to come upon this inspiring and engrossing book as we round the turn of the first year of pandemic. Ms Havens' personal journey, at once impressive and touching, engrosses the reader and then takes a sharp, no-nonsense turn to Africa. Not one to linger after personal upheaval and huge life changes, she pivots to a new direction, gathers her resources and great experiential background and off we go(!), exploring this wondrous continent we never know well enough. This book takes our focus sharper and sharper from overview to country and history to village and family and person. We see, feel, smell, touch and taste the stories we read. We see how life can look so different and motivations and emotions can feel so familiar, transcending language and culture. I didn't want this book to end, but now that it has, I want to make a sharp turn myself, and explore the horizons that have just been opened to me, even if it's homebound for now. I highly recommend this compelling and enlightening collage of vivid experiences by a gifted and deeply-caring guide. Someone expecting a safari guide will be disappointed by Lani Haven's beautifully written memoir of living in the villages of Kenya.
