My husband purchased this book for me online as I enjoy reading books about the experiences of RV travelers. We are currently traveling full time in our RV, so I found it interesting to read about the experience of another traveler and see the country through his eyes. Since our goal is to travel in every state (except Hawaii and Alaska), I am always curious why people hit the road, the route they take and how much time they spend traveling around the U.S. The author and his wife set out to travel around the U.S. for a year without a fixed itinerary. I found the book to be well written and engaging. It kept my interest from beginning to end. As I read, it was fun to anticipate if they would visit some of the same places we had visited and if so, what their experience was. I chuckled at some of his descriptions of life in an RV, especially when arriving to a campsite and the “fun” of maneuvering an RV into a new spot, not an easy feat for any of us. When their year came to an end, they returned to their home state but I was left with some questions. The book did not explain why they chose to go for a year and what their plans were once returning “home.” (They sold their house before leaving and had retired from their jobs). At times during their year trip, the author mentioned how they wanted to spend more time in a certain place (for example Maine), but did not say why they just didn’t spend more time and lengthen their trip on the road. The main question my husband and I get from family and friends is how long we plan to be on the road and where do we plan to live after, so I guess I had the same curiousity as well about the author’s plans after his year of traveling. All in all, I would recommend this fine look at the author’s memorable experience searching out America’s heartbeat. I enjoyed reading about the journey. But my favorite parts were when the trip was beginning... I could hear my husband and I having the same conversations! Thanks for the laughs!
